The recently opened Simpson Garden Park has set out to be a great community garden. What was once a stretch of sparse, open land on the western edge of the city, is now a mix of garden spaces, wandering trails, shade and ornamental trees, and home to over ten distinct gardens.
The park's main entrance is off the parking lot of the Simpson Building located on the corner of Wintergarden Rd. and Conneaut Ave. Walking out of the parking area behind the building visitors first encounter a whole series of rows of raised garden beds. The beds are raised off the ground slightly so that those who have difficulty bending down can still come and easily enjoy the gardens!
Passing through the raised gardens one enters the Sculpture Garden, a broad, rolling stretch of the park with 3-dimensional works by area artists on view. Students at BGSU's School of Art have provided a number of the early pieces.
Proceeding further back into the park a variety of settings are encountered along the trails. There's a Peace Garden with large trees and a pond, a Sensory Garden with a water fountain and wind chimes, an Upland Garden where the plants grow in shallow topsoil, a couple of bridges cross over the stream runs through the park, and much more. There's even a Children's Discovery Garden where youngsters can safely explore the plantings.
The community is invited to be a part of caring for and helping develop the Simpson Garden Park. Volunteers maintain a scheduled set of maintenance work, with specific volunteers handling the responsibilities of Garden leader over each of the individual gardens in the park. Individuals can even arrange to plant specific flowers at the park.
