Century Trees

Bowling Green State University celebrates it's Centennial anniversary in 2010, and with all the attention around this milestone, even the trees on campus get a chance in the spotlight. A special project was undertaken to identify and accurately date trees on campus that were part of the landscape during the earliest days of the university.

Through the effort twenty-three trees were found to be at least 100 years old. The tree's specific ages were determined with help from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division through small core samples removed from each tree. Historic photos of early campus were also used to help identify candidate trees.

Each of the identified trees is adorned with a special banner announcing its status as a "Century Tree" and a card placed near the base of the tree provides more details, including a reference number to use to look even more information about the particular tree on the university's website.

All of the trees identified as Century Trees are of some variety of Oak, mainly White, Red, Black, Swamp White, or Chinquapin Oaks. The majority of the Century Trees are located towards the western end of campus near the Student Union and University Hall, where they continue to contribute grandly to the pleasant and visually inspiring atmosphere found in so many locations on the BGSU campus.
